Direct entry bachelor's in Switzerland: steps and timeline | BHMS
What you send, who reads it, what the review decides and how long the road to the degree is, from your community college transcript to graduation in Lucerne.
Direct entry to a bachelor's degree in Switzerland works like this: you send your transcript, BHMS reviews it individually, and that review decides whether you join Year 2 or the final year.[1] Join the final year and you can finish in twelve months: one academic semester in Lucerne, then a six-month paid internship.[2] The next final-year starts are 16 November 2026, 22 February 2027 and 16 August 2027.[1]
Who can use direct entry?
You must be at least 18, with IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. You also need one year of equivalent training or two years of work experience.[1]
There are two routes. On the academic route, you've completed the first or second year of a hospitality or culinary arts program elsewhere. On the experience route, you have hospitality or culinary work that admissions can verify and that matches first-year material. That can get you into Year 2.[1]
If you hold an associate degree in Hotel Management or Business, you join the final BA semester directly.[2] That doesn't mean every associate degree qualifies. Studied something adjacent, such as tourism? Send the transcript anyway, because the review will give you the answer.[1]
What do you send?
Admissions asks for five things, all in English: the application form, your CV, a motivation letter, your associate degree transcript and a passport scan. If you haven't graduated yet, send your latest college transcript.[2] Applying on work experience? Send employer letters and role descriptions instead. Admissions checks those.[1]
You don't have to wait for every document. You can get a provisional acceptance letter while you're still chasing down transcripts.[2]
How does credit recognition work?
BHMS reviews each transcript individually, and it doesn't guarantee that it will accept academic credits from other institutions.[1] Sometimes you'll need to complete an additional term to meet the module requirements.[1] So please don't plan on every course you took being counted.
The yardstick is European. The BA is 180 ECTS (360 UK credits) over three years, and each year is 120 credits, or 60 ECTS.[5] In the ECTS system, 60 credits equal a full year of study, and credits rest on defined learning outcomes and the workload behind them.[3] The review asks which of those outcomes your courses already cover. The reviewers decide how your US credit hours map onto them, and we won't offer a conversion rate.
Credit loss isn't a Swiss problem alone. A U.S. Government Accountability Office study of students who began college in 2003-04 estimated they lost 43% of their credits on average when they changed schools. Between public schools the figure was 37%.[4] That data is old, and it describes the US system, not BHMS. Still, it's a good reason to get the answer in writing, wherever you go.
How long does direct entry take?
| You join | Structure | Time to the degree |
|---|---|---|
| Year 2 | Four semesters: study in Lucerne, internship, study in Lucerne, internship | About two years[1] |
| Year 3 (final year) | Two semesters: study in Lucerne, then internship | About one year, as little as 12 months[1] |
BHMS and Robert Gordon University (UK) award the BA together.[5] If the review asks for an additional term, add it to the totals above.
Final-year entry runs in February, August and November only.[1] Today is 31 October 2026, so 16 November is about two weeks away. Ask admissions whether it's still open to you. For most of you, the realistic starts are 22 February 2027 or 16 August 2027. Our fact sheets give no visa or permit processing time, so we can't promise one here. Put that question to admissions when you write.
What this means for you
Start with the transcript, not the application form. It decides your entry year, and you can request it from your community college today.
- Order your transcript, official if you can, or your latest one if you haven't graduated yet.
- Check your English: IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. If you're below that, there's a 10-week Preparatory English Programme.[1]
- Pick the intake you're aiming at. February or August 2027 is the working choice for most.
- Apply and send what you have. A provisional acceptance letter can follow while the rest of the paperwork catches up.[2]
- Wait for the individual review, then plan around its answer: Year 2, Year 3, and whether you need an additional term.
Paying for it is a separate question from admission, so read the fee tables before you apply, including how US federal student aid applies.
